The Ozark Christian College men’s basketball team improved to 3-0 by pulling away in the second half for a 90-78 win against Faith Baptist Bible in the Manhattan Christian Classic on Friday.
The OCC women, however, dropped a 49-47 decision to Faith Baptist Bible of Ankeny, Iowa.
Today, the OCC women (1-2) play St. Louis College of Pharmacy at 11 a.m. and its men tackle Lincoln (Ill.) Christian at 12:45 p.m.
The OCC men, who led only 51-50 at the half, shot markedly better from the field (50.8 percent to 42.6) and from the foul line (74.3-67.9).
Austin Weece sparked OCC by scoring 17 points in just 16 minutes on 8-for-9 accuracy from the floor and 1-for-1 from the line.
Clancy Allmoslecher, who was 9 of 10 from the line, matched Weece’s scoring output and Steven Tackett added 16.
Tyler Betz scored 28 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to pace Faith Baptist Bible.
The Faith Baptist Bible women were powered by Lindsie Poorman. She tallied 17 points, snared 16 rebounds and had eight steals.
OCC shot just 26.1 percent from the field and 47.4 from the foul line. It got 13 points from Chelsea Sneed (who was 6-for-12 from the floor), 12 from Darby Todd (6-for-11) and 11 from Melea Cook.
PSU women bow
DENTON, Texas — Pittsburg State’s women’s basketball team was defeated by Tarleton State 75-46 in the opening game of the DFW Marriott Champions Circle Pioneer Premier at Texas Woman’s University.
Senior DePrice Taylor led the Lady Gorillas with nine points. Senior Maya Onikute and junior Laura Glenn each scored seven. Senior Nicole McCombs led the team with six rebounds. Onikute and Glenn each had five rebounds.
Tarleton’s Brittnie Haley scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds. JoAnne Jones scored 12 points, while Sonya Sundberg and Shelby Adamson each scored 10.
Pittsburg State, 1-1, was held scoreless for five minutes during a 13-0 Tarleton State run in the first half. A three-pointer from Bailey Waugh and a basket by Taylor pulled the Lady Gorillas to within seven points with 13:36 to go in the half.
Pittsburg State trailed 20-16 before Tarleton State went on a 13-2 run and led 41-28 at halftime.
In the second half, Pittsburg State did not score in the last 7:39 of the game.
Pittsburg State will play Texas Woman’s at 4 p.m. today.
Crowder Classic
NEOSHO, Mo. — The Lady ’Riders, falling 66-60 to Grayson (Texas) County, suffered just their second loss in six games in the second contest.
North Arkansas of Harrison defeated Southwestern Illinois 55-51 in the first game.
Today’s schedule is Grayson vs. North Arkansas at 1 p.m. and Crowder vs. Southwestern at 3.
Admission is free for those fans bringing two canned good items.
Grayson, which rallied from a 34-32 halftime deficit, received 19 points from Damequia Montgomery. Alexandria O’Neal and Ewa Urbanowska combined for 25.
For Crowder, Sierra McSpadden tallied 15, Kallie Flood 12 and Jaimee Shields 10.
North Arkansas rallied from a 24-20 halftime deficit. Hannah Young scored 13 points for the winner and Haylee Althoff notched 12 for Southwestern.
Cottey Classic
NEVADA, Mo. — Five Comets scored in double figures as the host Comets defeated Rhema Bible of Broken Arrow (Okla.) 79-65 in the opening round.
Redlands (Okla.) beat North Central Missouri of Trenton 58-51 in the first game.
North Central and Rhema Bible open today’s schedule at 1 p.m. Cottey and Redlands play at 3.
Cottey received 15 points from Alex Noble, 14 apiece from Amanda Sanders and Tessa Porter, 13 from Bailey Beale and 12 from Natascha Lord.
Kayna Daniel sank six treys in scoring 25 points for Rhema Bible.
