ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —
The St. Joseph Mustangs ran their winning streak to seven games in MINK League play Friday night by sweeping past the Joplin Outlaws at Phil Welch Stadium.
The Mustangs scored all their runs in the first three innings to win the opener 6-4, then rode the three-hit pitching of Nik Jurado to a 5-0 victory in the nightcap.
St. Joseph improved to 21-7 overall and 16-7 in the MINK.
Joplin’s four-game win streak ended. The Outlaws are 14-14, 12-14 entering tonight’s 7 p.m. series finale at Welch Stadium.
The Mustangs took control early in the opener, scoring three times in the first inning on four hits and a walk. Second baseman Kyle Simpson set the tone with an RBI triple after Maxime Lefevre walked. Kris Koerper and Shane Segovia added run-scoring singles.
Joplin scored twice in the top of the second. Koby Chadick doubled, Cody Ball singled and Justin Treece hit a sacrifice fly. Conor Smith’s single made it a 3-2 game.
Lefevre singled, swiped a base and scored for St. Joseph in the second. Jordan Guida hit a two-run homer, after a Koerper single, in the third.
Joplin cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth. Ball reached on an error and Smith slugged his first homer of the season.
Three St. Joseph pitchers combined to blank the Miners the rest of the way. Chris Green, a Carl Junction product, finished for the save.
The Mustangs took a 1-0 lead in the third inning of the second game, with Lefevre again leading the way. The Mustangs’ second baseman singled, stole one of his five bases on the night, and eventually scored as Mark Robinette grounded into a double play.
In the fifth, Lefevre singled, stole a base and scored again on a Simpson single.Guida, Will Mulligan and Jake Gretzer added consecutive RBI hits to break the game open.
Kyle Dickens, Chadick and Ball had the only Joplin hits.
