Breckin Williams signs to play baseball at Missouri

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The summer has gone well for Webb City High School graduate Breckin Williams.

Believe it.

Williams signed a letter of intent with the University of Missouri of the Southeastern Conference on Monday night.

“I didn’t have the spring season I really wanted,” Williams said. “It motivated me for the summer.

“The summer has gone really well,” Williams said. “I caught my stride and I’ve been hitting and throwing well.”

The signing ceremony was held at Buffalo Wild Wings Grill & Bar in Joplin with family, several friends and his Webb City head coaches (baseball’s Chris Taylor, basketball’s Landon Cornish and football’s John Roderique) present.

Said Taylor: “This is a big deal. Breckin was able to get an outstanding scholarship, He’s performed very well this summer and apparently will get an opportunity as an outfielder and pitcher.”

Williams previously signed with junior college power Eastern Oklahoma State College of Wilburton.

Eastern Oklahoma, in its first season under Craig Price, finished 38-22 overall, ranked 19th nationally and runner-up to host Jefferson College in the South Central District at Hillsboro, Mo. The Mountaineers won their third straight Region II championship.

“Coach Price has been a blessing,” Williams said. “I’ve talked to him a lot this summer. He wished me the best.”

Williams said he officially visited two more NCAA Division I schools — Kansas State and Penn State.

The switch-hitting Williams currently is playing the outfield — “all over,” he said — and pitching for the Springfield-based 18-under Midwest Nationals.

Williams said the Nationals won the 18-under Mid-America World Series at Fayetteville (Ark.) last weekend. They will compete in the 18-under Premier World Series in Springfield this weekend.

Missouri won the Big 12 Conference Tournament for Tim Jamieson this spring for the first time. The Tigers’ appearance in the Tucson (Ariz.) Regional— they placed third behind Arizona and Louisville — was their eighth regional in 10 years.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Williams, an All-Ozarks selection by the Springfield News-Leader, was 6-0 with a 1.84 ERA and 66 strikeouts in 49 innings as a senior for the Cardinals. The all-conference (Central Ozark Conference Large Division) selection hit .371 with 25 runs scored and a 52.6 on-base percentage.

Three more Cardinals off the 17-8, 4-3 edition have signed — Gage Belcher (Hesston), Klay James (Labette) and Richie Peoples (Crowder).

Known as the “Blue Book,” Missouri’s official manual that includes information about public officials, state officials and local governments is online only now as a cost-savings measure. If the governor signs new legislation, a nonprofit could print it and distribute it to the public. Would you buy one?
