Baxter Springs' Minor signs with Coffeyville CC

Baxter Springs High School’s Austin Minor, a three-year starter at linebacker for the Lions, has signed a letter of intent with Coffeyville Community College.

Minor, who also toiled at fullback and tight end for the Lions, expects to concentrate as the long snapper for the Red Ravens.

Said Baxter Springs coach Donnie Bigby: “Austin has a lot of goals and dreams. Coffeyville can help him realize those goals and dreams. He’s very motivated.

“He was a very aggressive, committed and a strong player,” Bigby said. “Again, he was very motivated ... a great kid.”

The duty of long snapper suits the 5-foot-9, 200-pound Minor just fine.

His hero, after all, has been long snapper Kendall Gammon of Pittsburg State. Gammon also spent several years in the NFL mainly with Buffalo.

Said Minor: “I haven’t met him (Gammon). But he was a Kansas guy and played at Pittsburg State. Then, of course, he finished his playing career with the Chiefs.

“People always were saying if I worked hard I could get a scholarship and be like Kendall Gammon,” Minor said.

Austin, the son of Andrea and Mike Minor, plans to major in physical education and eventually coach at the college level.

The Red Ravens have a new head coach in former Butler Community College offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Aaron Flores.

Flores, who held those positions last season at Itawamba (Miss.) Community College, worked at Butler of El Dorado (Kan.) 2001 through 2010.
