Crowder tops Moberly

NEOSHO, Mo. — Defense and Taylor Murphy’s 16 points and five steals sparked Crowder past Moberly 51-44 in women’s junior college basketball on Wednesday night in Bob Sneller Gymnasium.

The Lady ’Riders, avenging an earlier loss this season, hiked their record to 18-7 overall and 5-3 against NJCAA Region XVI opponents. Crowder visits region foe Iowa Western of Council Bluffs for a 2 p.m. game on Saturday.

“Murphy (a 5-foot-7 veteran from Springdale, Ark.) really stepped up and had an outstanding game,” Crowder coach Tina Robbins said. “In fact, we also had kids step and play big.”

Crowder led 31-11 at the half and Moberly wound up shooting 29 percent overall from the field.

“We played well on defense,” Robbins said. “It was a zone most of the time.”

Murphy, who had three treys, was backed in scoring by Chloe Nichols (11) and Veronica Amos (10).

Amos and Nichols grabbed eight and six rebounds, respectively. Amos, Murphy and Sarah Sagely each had three steals  Amos also blocked three shots.

Ashley Stevenson tallied 13 for Moberly and Morgan Vetter sank three treys.
