HUTCHINSON, Kan. —
A quick glance at the stat sheet is all that’s needed to determine what the difference was in St. Mary’s-Colgan’s loss to two-time defending champion Scott City.
The seventh-seeded Panthers committed 24 turnovers, and the Beavers tallied 17 second-chance points compared to zero for Colgan. The combination helped Scott City to a 61-48 win over Colgan in the first round of the Kansas Class 3A state boys basketball tournament on Thursday at Hutchinson Sports Arena.
“We felt like we outplayed them in everything except those two categories,” Colgan coach Wayne Cichon said. “Those were big sore spots in the game.”
Colgan outscored Scott City 15-8 in the third quarter to make it a 43-37 game entering the fourth quarter. The Panthers later cut the lead to four.
Mistakes helped the Beavers answer with an 8-0 run.
“We had 24 turnovers,” Cichon said. “That’s very uncharacteristic of us. We had some turnovers that really cost us some opportunities.”
Scott City won the rebounding battle 32-24 overall and 10-1 on the offensive end.
Sophomore guard Trey O’Neil led Scott City with 17 points, while senior post Drew Kite scored 15.
Colgan was led by Dyson Dechant with 15 points and Austin Commons with 13.
Scott City advances to face Seneca-Nemaha Valley in the semifinals at 4:45 p.m. today in Hutchinson. The Panthers end their season with a 17-6 record and were eliminated in the first round of the 3A tournament for the second straight year.
“I feel real good about the performance we had,” Cichon said. “We took the two-time defending champs into the fourth quarter. But I want the younger kids to be hungry. We can come back here and be a factor.”
