— Monett entertains Jefferson City Blair Oaks today in the quarterfinal round of the MSHSAA Class 3 softball playoffs.

Introductions won’t be necessary.

Said Monett coach Ty Goetz: “We know they (the Falcons) are a good team. They beat us 10-1 — that’s our last loss — in the Carthage Tournament.

“We didn’t play well and had some players out of position because of various reasons,” Goetz said. “We’re trying to use that as motivation.

“We’ve improved since that meeting,” Goetz said. “I’m anxious to play. ... partially just to see if we can play better. We’re anxious to play at full speed and see what we can do.”

The 1:30 p.m. game between the Cubs (23-5) and Falcons (21-7) is scheduled for Monett North Park.

Goetz said sophomore right-hander Allie Krueger is the probable starting pitcher for Monett.

Krueger, backed by twin sister Abby’s two triples, tossed a three-hitter and struck out 13 in beating visiting Bolivar 7-2 in the sectional round on Wednesday.

Blair Oaks, meanwhile, defeated visiting Sullivan 13-5. Blair Oaks trailed Sullivan 4-3 after four innings but scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning and added five in the sixth to make it 12-4.

Blair Oaks coach Sharon Buschjost said sophomores Jolie Duffner and Ashley Forck hit homers against Sullivan. Forck’s homer was a three-run blow.

Buschjost, a graduate of Blair Oaks, is in her 16th season as head coach of the Falcons and guided them to the 2009 Class 2 crown. Blair Oaks was Tri-County Conference champion this season.

Buschjost said the Falcons finished 3-2 at Carthage. Both losses were to Class 4 quarterfinalist Ozark.

Buschjost said the Falcons played a strong schedule this season and offered as proof their participation in two more tourneys hosted by Class 4 schools — Jefferson City and Columbia Hickman.
