Monett upsets Cassville; Miller tops Lockwood

Monett upset No. 1-seed Cassville 10-6 and won the Class 3, District 6 championship Monday night at Cassville.

Monett scored the game’s only touchdown on its first possession of the second half. A 55-yard run by senior back Kurran Blamey set up a 5-yard touchdown run by Aaron Hall that gave Monett a 10-6 lead.

Monett (9-3) advanced to the quarterfinals and will play Eldon at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Monett.

“It was very important for our defense to come out and play well against a great Cassville team and they did,” said Monett head coach Chad Depee. “They tackled well. There’s a reason why they (Cassville) have been where they’ve been.”

Cassville, which won state championships in 2008 and 2009, led 6-3 at halftime on two field goals by Bradley Lueckenhoff. Monett’s Aaron Aldrich scored on a field goal in the second quarter.

Cassville had a first-and-goal at the Monett 10 with about two minutes left in the game but did not score, Depee said. After a Monett punt, Cassville’s last possession began with about a minute to go and no time outs.

Miller 39, Lockwood 6

Miller captured its third straight district championship by defeating Lockwood 39-6 Monday night at Miller.

Quarterback Dalton Gulick rushed for 155 yards and three touchdowns as the Cardinals, ranked No. 3 in Class 1 by the Missouri Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association, remained unbeaten.

Miller (12-0) advanced to the quarterfinals and will play at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Valle Catholic (10-2) in Ste. Genevieve. Valle defeated Portageville 47-10 Monday night.

Gulick scored on a 35-yard run and running back Derrick Estell scored on a 2-yard run as Miller took a 14-0 halftime lead.

“Our defense gave us good field position. We had a couple of interceptions in the third quarter,” said Miller head coach Dustin Baldwin. “We just blocked a little better and executed our plays a little better than we did in the first half.”

Lockwood (7-5), held to 14 yards rushing, scored in the fourth quarter on a 13-yard pass from quarterback Isaac Lasater to Isaac Spain.

Miller rushed for 347 yards, including Estell’s 100 yards and two touchdowns on seven carries. He scored on a 69-yard run in the third quarter.

Gulick scored on touchdown runs of 5 and 45 yards in the third quarter and Brenden Richardson added a 39-yard touchdown run.
