Six college lacrosse teams will play in the inaugural Joplin Lacrosse Invitational this weekend at the Joplin Athletic Complex.
Games start at 1 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. Sunday, and they will be played on the complex’s soccer fields. The tournament is a collaboration among the Joplin Parks and Recreation Department, Joplin Sports Authority and Missouri State lacrosse.
“We feel this is a sport taking off in the United States and the Midwest,” parks and recreation director Chris Cotten said in a press release. “This is our first effort to expose local athletes to this sport, and potentially its interest will grow here.”
Teams coming for the tournament in addition to Missouri State are Missouri, Kansas, Iowa State, Kansas State and Lindenwood.
Opening-round games at 1 p.m. Saturday pair Missouri vs. Lindenwood and Missouri State vs. Iowa State. Then at 3, Kansas will play the Missouri-Lindenwood winner and Kansas State faces the Iowa State-Missouri State winner.
Two more doubleheaders will begin Saturday at 5 and 7, and Sunday’s slate has games at 9, 10:30 and noon.
A free youth lacrosse clinic open to athletes age 6 through high school will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the complex. Registration can be done by contacting Paul Bloomberg, 417-625-4750, or email pbloombe-@joplinmo.org.
