ST. JOSEPH, Mo. —
Abby Widrig’s goal from 20 yards out late in the first overtime lifted Missouri Western past Missouri Southern 1-0 Friday night in an MIAA women’s soccer match.
The Lions outshot the Griffons 21-12 — including 8-5 in shots on goal — but couldn’t find the back of the net.
Missouri Western goalkeeper Kelly Voigts stopped eight shots, giving her a league-high 105 saves for the season.
In goal for the Lions, Abby Risner made one save in the first half, and Beth Hammons had three saves in the second half and OT.
The Lions (4-9-3, 4-5-2 MIAA) finish regular season play at Northwest Missouri State at 1 p.m. Sunday.
Missouri Western 3, MSSU 0
The Griffons snapped a five-match losing streak by beating Missouri Southern 3-0 (25-17, 28-26, 25-14) Friday night in Robert Ellis Young Gymnasium.
The Lions (0-25, 0-13) rallied from a 17-13 deficit to extend the second set. It was 26-26 before the Griffons (13-13, 4-9) won it on a Lion service error and an ace by Melissa Cairns, who also had a match-high 15 kills..
Callie Whetstone had eight kills and Sydney Potts had 17 assists for the Lions. Katie Politte made seven kills and a team-high 14 digs,
The Lions have another home match at 6 p.m. today against Northwest Missouri State.
