Prep roundup: Lakers rally past Joplin baseball

The Joplin Eagles sure got off to a nice start, taking a 3-0 lead after three hits from its first three batters and a sacrifice fly.

However, the Eagles mustered only one more hit for the rest of the game and recorded four errors in a 4-3 loss to Camdenton on Tuesday at Wendell Redden Stadium.

“We hit the ball all day, but we hit it right at them,” Joplin coach Kirk Harryman said. “It’s a game of inches.”

Joplin’s Nate Brummer opened the bottom of the first with a double. Chris Leonardi hit a single to move Brummer to third. Brett Graham followed with a two-run triple. Graham later scored on a sacrifice fly from Colton Johnson.

Camdenton took advantage of four Joplin errors, scoring two runs each in the fifth and sixth innings. Three of Camdenton’s four runs were unearned.

With runners on second and third with one out in the sixth inning, Camdenton tied the game when Cory Simpson hit a sacrifice fly to score the runner on third. An overthrow at third base gave the Lakers a 4-3 lead.

Joplin pitcher Caleb Garton fanned 11 batters in six innings, and relief pitcher Kealin Smith struck out three more. Graham was for 2-for-3 with two extra-base hits and two RBI.

Brett Lance earned the win for Camdenton.

Joplin (11-10, 3-4 Ozark Conference) plays Thursday at Glendale.
