Joplin High School’s Jeremy Lynn and Luke Frogge-Edran Ali earned return trips to the Class 2 state tennis tournament on Tuesday by winning their sectional matches.
Lynn, the district singles champion, rolled past Jadyn Cearnal of Branson 6-0, 6-0. Lynn finished fifth in last year’s state tournament.
“Jeremy played pretty well,” Eagles coach Sean McWilliams said. “He knows he has to continue to get better to get to the next level to achieve his goals for the season.”
Frogge-Ali, the district doubles winner, defeated Spencer Hamilton-Zack Gardner of Nixa 6-0, 7-6, taking the tiebreaker 7-0. Frogge-Ali placed in the top eight a year ago.
“They did a good job of battling through a tight second set,” McWilliams said. “Qualifying a singles and doubles entry for state, we had a great day.”
The Eagles’ Sam Willcoxon-Duncan Ford lost to district winner Ryan Bunselmeyer-Devin Cavero of Springfield Central 6-0, 6-0.
In the other singles match, Carthage’s Richard Perry beat Chris Choe of Central 7-6 (5), 6-4. Choe won his district while Perry was district runner-up behind Lynn. Perry, a member of the Joplin team for two years before moving to Carthage, is state bound for the first time.
Joplin travels to Springfield on Saturday for the team sectional competition, starting at 9 a.m.
