OCC wins, sets up showdown

PITTSBURG, Kan. — The Ozark Christian College men’s basketball team shot 58.2 percent from the field on Saturday in winning 90-70 on the road and setting up a likely second showdown with Manhattan Christian.

OCC, hiking its record to 18-9 overall and 9-1 in the Midwest Christian College Conference, beat Nebraska Christian in the Kroc Center at Omaha.

Now, Manhattan Christian, 9-0 in the MCCC, has a home game on Monday (against Calvary Bible) and a road game on Tuesday (against Barclay at Haviland, Kan.) before Friday’s 7:30 p.m. home test against OCC.

OCC, which lost 70-68 to Manhattan in Joplin on Feb. 3, travels to Barclay on Saturday.

“We jumped out to a 16-2 lead and the outcome was never in doubt,” OCC coach Chris Lahm said of the win against the Parsons.

The Ambassadors sank 39 of 67 shots from the field, Lahm noted, and he singled out Paden Bennett for his 11 assists.

“We were able to get the ball inside,” Lahm said.

Austin Weece was 6 of 6 from the field, Kyle Wicklund 7 of 8 and Kendall Wingert 4 of 5 to highlight the Ambassadors’ sharp shooting.

The Ambassadors, who led 51-39 at the half, weren’t sharp from the foul line, however, with only 4 of 12.

“That’s par for the course this season,” Lahm lamented.

But Lahm was pleased by the OCC scoring balance — six players reached double figures.

Wicklund scored 15, Weece and Darrin Chitwood 13 apiece, Marko Mircetic 11 and Steven Tackett and Hunter Jacobs 10 apiece. Chitwood and Mircetic each had three treys.

Chitwood added nine rebounds — OCC led 39-24 in that department — and Wicklund blocked three shots and had two steals.

Kendrick Moore, who sank 7 of 12 shots from the floor, tallied 14 to lead Nebraska Christian. James Daniel and Zach Miller combined for an additional 23 points.

The Parsons shot just 43.9 percent from the field and 55.6 from the foul line.
