Monett won six of its seven matches Thursday in the first round of the MSHSAA Wrestling Championships at Mizzou Arena.
The Cubs ended the day seventh in the Class 2 team standings with 22.5 points. Oak Grove leads with 30.5 points.
Monett’s Sean Jastal at 106 and Kedrick Brink at 120 won their matches by pin, Chase Brennan at 113 won by technical fall and Devon Overall at 195 won by forfeit.
Dominick Witherow at 145 decisioned Kyle Schwantner of Central (Park Hills), 4-2. Schwantner came into the tournament with a record of 41-7. Matt Wentz at 182 decisioned Cole Bartow of Odessa, 10-7.
Wesley Abramovitz, who was major decisioned by No. 2-ranked Bailey Wilson of Smithville, pinned Dustin Conner of St. Clair in the first-round wrestlebacks.
Nevada went 4-for-4 in its first-round matches. Dayton Miller at 106, Slade Stiles at 120 and Sam Ellifrits at 285 all won by pin. Colby Smith at 220 decisioned Justin McWilliams of Central (Park Hills), 3-1.
In Class 1, Seneca won five of its nine first-round matches, then came back in the first-round wrestlebacks and pinned three of four opponents.
The Indians were tied with Lawson for fifth place in the team standings with 22 points. Brookfield held the first-day lead with 30.5 points.
Cole Lankford at 126 scored Seneca’s only pin of the first round, and Will Roark at 120 won by major decision.
Jesse Rhoades at 132, Jalen Skaggs at 160 and Jeff Butler at 182 won their first-round matches by decision. Quinten Cotten at 113, Ryker Skelton at 170 and Devin Madison at 220 won with pins in the first-round wrestlebacks.
Diamond’s Jordan Douglas at 145 advanced to the quarterfinals by pinning Ben Glenn of Tarkio in the second period.
