Joplin guard Brown says he'll play at Southern

Charlie Brown’s calendar awareness matches his basketball court awareness.

“My next tweet will not be April fools,” he wrote on Twitter on Tuesday morning, April 1.

Then came the next tweet: “Verbally committed to Missouri Southern State University.”

Brown, 6-foot-1 guard who was a four-year starter at Joplin High School, will sign his letter-of-intent to officially join the Lions on April 16, the first day of the NCAA’s national signing period. New Lions head coach Jeff Boschee can’t comment until Brown’s paperwork is in hand, but several MSSU basketball players — past and present — sent welcome and congratulatory words to Brown via Twitter.

For a long time it appeared Brown, a first team selection on the Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Class 5 all-state team, would be leaving town and playing college basketball at the Division I level.

“The recruiting process pretty much started my sophomore year with some Division I schools,” he said. “As the years went by, they went away.

“Looking at my options, Missouri Southern was the first one to offer me a full ride. I have known Coach Boschee since I was in the eighth grade. I’m comfortable with the coaching staff. I felt it would be best place for me for four years to continue playing basketball and pursue my education.”

Brown is grateful he received all the attention during recruiting, but he’s not disappointed the process is over.

“After a while it can be a real headache … calls and texts from coaches every day,” he said. “It feels good to be finally over.”

Naturally Brown will have a lot of support playing for the Lions.

“Playing at home is very exciting,” he said. “I had a lot of support at Joplin, and I’m sure it will carry over to Missouri Southern.”
