Zaidi, Butler top Joplin girls tennis ladder

Laela Zaidi, a senior, and sophomore Sydney Butler are atop the leader board for the Joplin High School girls tennis team.

New coach Ed Ingle said on Tuesday that Zaidi and freshman Madison Erwin make up the No. 1 doubles team for the Thursday opener.

The Eagles entertain Nevada at 4:30 p.m. at the Joplin Athletic Complex.

Ingle said that Zaidi and Maddie Fitzpatrick, Joplin’s other senior, are captains.

Said Ingle: “We’re looking forward to the season. I believe we’ll be successful. We’ll have fun.”

Completing the top eight in singles, Ingle said, are junior McKenzie Erisman, junior Suma Ancha, junior Gretchen White, Erwin, Fitzpatrick and junior Stephanie Kent.

Rounding out doubles against Nevada, Ingle said, will be White-Butler and Ancha-Erisman.

“I believe our doubles teams, even though they still are developing, will be strong,” Ingle said. “They have great chemistry. Each player has a trait, or attribute, that will complement the other.

Ingle said that Abby and Maddy West, junior twins, will lead the junior varsity. Also, he said, they will form a doubles team.

Completing the squad are junior Erin Parrot, sophomores Meggi Augustesky, Kayla Graciano, Molly Ritter and Ashleigh Schneider, and freshman Cami Sanders.

Ingle, who replaced Sean McWilliams, will be assisted by Thomas MacQueeny. Ingle’s wife, Julie, will be a volunteer assistant.

Regular-season tournaments for Joplin, in addition to postseason, will be the Southwest Missouri at Springfield Cooper on Sept. 13-14, the Ozark Conference on Oct. 2 and the Thomas Jefferson on Oct. 4.

Ingle noted the Southwest Missouri event originally was scheduled this weekend.
