The College Heights Cougars remained unbeaten by upending Miller 19-25, 25-11, 25-15 Tuesday night in their Spring River Valley Conference volleyball opener.
The Cougars (3-0, 1-0 SRVC) received nine kills from Konner McIntire, four blocks from Kaylee Ohmart and six aces among 18 points from Makaya Fuller.
Bayleigh Reynolds paced Miller (1-2) with five kills.
“I felt like the second and third games of the match our girls started working well together,” College Heights coach Karla Gaines said. “We were a little slow starting in the first game.”
Nixa drops Joplin
NIXA, Mo. — Nixa defeated the Joplin Eagles 25-13, 25-21.
Chloe Hadley led the Eagles with five points, five assists and two digs. Jessie McMullen followed with four points, Allison Cox had two digs and Danielle Walker added four kills.
The Eagles (1-2) entertain Lebanon at 5 p.m. Thursday.
Cardinals defeat Mustangs
ANDERSON, Mo. — Webb City defeated McDonald County in straight sets 25-11, 25-11 in varsity action.
Katie Box led the Cardinals with 11 kills and five digs. Kaitlin Jaeger recorded five digs, and Sharenda Campbell served three aces.
Darien Stancell had four kills and two blocks for the Mustangs (1-2).
McDonald County plays Branson at 8 a.m. Saturday in the Branson Tournament.
Carthage bests Carl Junction
CARTHAGE, Mo. — The Tigers improved to 2-0 by clipping Carl Junction 25-17, 22-25, 25-18 in a nonconference match.
Carthage leaders included Chelsey Williams (nine kills), Lindsey Terry (three aces, 24 assists), Emily Goeken (two blocks), Hannah Blount (13 digs) and Andrea Westhoff (13 digs).
For Carl Junction (1-2), Johanna Lingner had two aces, Mackenzie Valenti 15 kills, Katelyn Joyner 15 assists, Rickie Duley three blocks and Mikenna Eberhart seven digs.
Exeter slips past Cavaliers
EXETER, Mo. — Exeter bounced back from an opening-set loss to defeat Thomas Jefferson 4-25, 25-11, 25-16 in Ozark 7 Conference action.
Sally Currence led the Cavaliers with 13 kills while teammate Adelle Kanan turned in nine assists.
Thomas Jefferson (0-3) entertains Golden City at 6 p.m. Thursday.
SOFTBALL
Rolla 3, Joplin 1
One big inning was the difference as the Rolla Bulldogs trimmed Joplin in Ozark Conference softball action on Tuesday at the Joplin High School field.
With the score knotted 0-0 in the third inning, Bulldogs pitcher Andrea Zalis ripped a two-run single with two outs to break the tie. The Bulldogs (7-1, 2-0 Ozark) added another run to make it 3-0 before the inning was over.
The Eagles (6-4, 1-1) plated their run in the bottom of the seventh.
“We had one tough inning on defense,” Eagles coach Kirk Harryman said in reference to the third inning. “Other than that I thoughi it was a well played game by both teams.”
The Eagles hit the road for a 4:30 p.m. conference contest Thursday against Camdenton.
SOCCER
Carl Junction 4, CHC 1
The visiting Bulldogs, opening their season, used a second-half flurry of goals to triumph.
Carl Junction led 1-0 at the half on Jake Tate’s goal before the Cougars caught up early in the second half on Dalton Zarrabi’s goal.
But the Bulldogs — starting with R.J. Pericola’s unassisted goal at 55:00 — quickly pulled away. Jordan Keller and Pericola tallied at 58:00 and 65:00, respectively, to pad the advantage.
The Cougars slipped to 1-3-1.
Riverton 7, Thomas Jefferson 2
RIVERTON, Kan. — Jared Hight, Parker Patterson and Hayden Wilson scored two goals apiece as Riverton decked Thomas Jefferson.
Erik Bruton added the Rams’ final goal in the 50th minute to make it 7-0.
Alex Oserowski scored in the 74th and 76th minutes for Thomas Jefferson (0-2).
Riverton (1-0-1) entertains Pittsburg at 2 p.m. Saturday.
TENNIS
Split for Joplin
The Eagles suffered an 8-0 loss against Glendale after beating Parkview 6-3 in duals against Ozark Conference teams at the Joplin Athletic Complex.
Joplin, 4-3 in duals, received singles wins from Meghan McCreary, Dana Jacobs, Lexie Willcoxon and Leah Collins against Parkview. Doubles wins were logged by McCreary and Laela Zaidi and Siri Ancha and Lexie Willcoxon.
The No. 3 doubles match for Jacobs and Collins against Glendale wasn’t completed because of rain.
Thomas Jefferson 6, Lamar 3
LAMAR, Mo. — The Cavaliers’ Shannon Clark and Ophelia Chen won at No. 1 doubles to help the team improve to 1-2 in duals.
Chen, Cayla Burnett, Maggie Jones and Thisbe Scholfield Johnson also won in singles. Burnett and Johnson combined to win at No. 2 doubles.
Lamar’s Kailey Roland defeated Clark at No. 1 singles.
GOLF
Carl Junction wins triangular
CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Carl Junction swept top honors in a triangular on the front nine at Briarbrook Golf and Country Club.
Using a different match format, a two-hour time limit was placed on each threesome, and three team points were awarded to the winner of each group, two points for second place and one point for third.
The Bulldogs finished with 15 points, and Joplin edged Seneca 7-6 for second place.
Carl Junction golfers won all five pairings — Paige Drummond, Maddie Ferson, Hannah Kerr, Erica Harnar and Mallory Ware.
Joplin, Carl Junction and Seneca all compete in the Girard Tournament, which begins at 9 a.m. Thursday.
