Regional cross county meet assigned to Missouri Southern

Regional cross country competition is returning to Missouri Southern.

The NCAA announced on Wednesday that the 2015 Central Region cross country meet will be held on the Missouri Southern course.

“It’s great for Missouri Southern,” athletics director Jared Bruggeman said. “It shows the NCAA knows what we bring to the table as far as facility and the ability to host events.

“It’s great for the community and the economy. Think about the number of people coming into town ... spectators spending money, staying in hotels, eating, shopping. It’s a great deal for Joplin.”

This will be the sixth time Missouri Southern has been the host for a regional cross country meet. The regional was held at MSSU five times in a 14-year span — 1999, 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2012.

“We’re always happy to be able to host,” Lions women’s coach Patty Vavra said. “It’s a great advantage for our athletes, and we have the respect to host from time to time because we are so fortunate to have a great cross country facility.

“It will sure beat going 8 to 12 hours to other schools in the region. It certainly will be better than going north. We’re about as far south in the region as you can get.”

Missouri Southern also is a finalist for the national cross country meet in 2015.

The national meet was run at MSSU in 1999, 2007 and 2012.
