SENECA, Mo. —
Monett quarterback Tyler Green accounted for all five touchdowns to lead the Cubs to a crucial 33-21 Big 8 Conference victory over Seneca on Friday night at Earl D. Campbell Stadium.
Green completed 12-of-13 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns and rushed 11 times for 47 yards and two more scores.
“All I had to do was get (the ball) to my athletes,’’ Green said of his teammates. “They did all of the work.’’
Green was mainly speaking of receiver Kurran Blamey and tailback Aaron Hall, who, like Green, had huge games for the Cubs (4-5, 3-3 Big 8 Conference, 1-1 Class 3 District 11)..
After hauling in a 20-yard pass from Green on the game’s first play, Blamey went on to snag eight passes for 171 yards and three touchdowns.
“He’s just a phenomenal athlete,’’ Green said of Blamey. “Our line gave me plenty of time to throw it and I have to credit both of them. We found a way to get the ball to our (top) players.’’
Hall, meanwhile, became a force in the second half as the Cubs jumped ahead 27-14 and began looking to milk the clock with a series of run plays. Though he never found the end zone, Hall was crucial in running out the clock and setting up scoring drives. He finished with 174 yards on 12 carries.
“To come down here to Seneca and get a win is huge for us and our program,’’ Cubs coach Chad Depee said. “There’s a reason why they were 5-3. They’re a great program and a very good team. We were fortunate to come out and start fast. We felt that was a big crucial key for us to do.’’
Both teams started strong and the score was deadlocked 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. The turning point for the Cubs, however, came midway through the second quarter.
Just over a minute after a five-yard touchdown strike from Green to Blamey made it 13-7, Cubs junior defensive back Tyler Bass intercepted a tipped pass and returned it to Seneca’s 35. On the next play Green again found Blamey wide open down the seam to make it 21-7 after completing the 2-point conversion pass.
“I couldn’t be more pleased with the effort,’’ Depee said. “Hat’s off to Seneca, they are a class-act program and they played their tails off.
“We’re going to go home and celebrate this one,’’ he added. “Because any time you come down to Seneca and get a win you’d better thank the good Lord above.’’
The Indians (5-4, 4-2 Big 8, 1-1 district) had their own ground weapon in tailback Marty Mailes. The junior rushed for 133 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries.
Cubs defensive end Matt Schiffner turned in three key sacks to thwart Indians drives.
“I thought we stepped up in the second half,’’ Depee said. “Our defense made some key stops.’’
