Crystal Whitten totaled 13 kills and Nicole Rockhold had 11 kills and 11 digs to lead Pittsburg State past Missouri Southern 3-0 (25-22, 25-15, 25-16) in a season-ending volleyball match at the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
The Gorillas’ victory and the victory by the football team on Saturday afternoon squared the Sonic Trophy Series standings at 2-2. There are six points available in winter sports and five in the spring.
The Gorillas finish the season with a 17-13 record — their first winning mark since 2009 — and 7-10 in MIAA play. The Lions were 0-30 and 0-18 in the league.
The Lions led most of the first set before Pittsburg State rallied to tie it at 20-20. A kill by Callie Whetstone and block by Whetstone and Payton Graves gave Missouri Southern a 22-20 lead but the Gorillas scored the final five points, two on kills by Rockhold and Brooke Fay.
Pittsburg State maintained the lead for most of the final two sets. There was one lead change in the second set and two in the third set.
Katie Politte had 10 kills to lead Missouri Southern. Other leaders included Sydney Potts with 13 assists and Sarah Cunningham with six digs.
