COLUMBIA, Mo. — Dorial Green had 15 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and Trey Starks added 22 to lead Hillcrest High School to a 54-49 win over Oakville in the Class 5 state title game Saturday.
Oakville held a four-point lead with just over two minutes to play but came up empty on back-to back possessions after Green blocks. The Hornets took the lead for good on a Green follow-up with 1:27 to go.
Green scored five of the Hornets’ first seven points of the game before going silent in the second and third quarters, scoring just one point.
The championship is the Springfield school’s first since 1984.
The Hornets (23-7) started the season just 10-7 but ended on a 13-game winning streak.
Oakville (25-5) was led by Toraino Helms 19.
Class 4 boys
Forward Dillon Starzl scored a game-high 20 points for Kearney High School as the Bulldogs defeated St. Francis Borgia 47-43 in the Missouri class 4 boys basketball state championship.
Grant Cozad added 10 for Kearney to hand defending champ Borgia its first loss of the season in a rematch of last season’s title game.
Borgia, of Washington, Mo., set a Show-Me Showdown record for 3-point field-goal percentage in their semifinal victory Friday by knocking down nine of 11 long shots. But the Knights found themselves cold in Saturday’s final, shooting just 6-for-29 from beyond the arc.
Nathan Scheer led Borgia with 17 on 4-for-16 shooting. The Knights last defeat came on Jan. 21, 2009.
Class 5 girls
Incarnate Word Academy of St. Louis got 14 points from Brianna Puni and 12 more from Brittany Carter on its way to a 52-43 victory over Blue Springs for the Missouri Class 5 girls championship.
The Red Knights jumped out to a 16-8 first quarter advantage but saw that lead wiped out by a 12-2 Blue Springs run to begin the second frame. Trailing by two at the break, Incarnate Word bounced back with a 13-3 run of their own to start the third and never looked back.
Incarnate Word finished the season 29-1, with the only blemish on its record coming against Whitney Young High School of Chicago.
Cherisse Burris led the way for Blue Springs (26-4), tallying 16.
