Pitt State women get big win against ESU

PITTSBURG, Kan. — You can call it a big day for the Pittsburg State women.

Just hours after claiming the No. 1 slot in the NCAA Division II South Central regional rankings, the Gorillas  set a school-record with their 23rd win of the season by holding the Emporia State Hornets to their lowest point total in 16 years.

The Gorillas, ranked eighth nationally, rallied from a four-point halftime deficit and beat the No. 20 Hornets 49-42.

The Pitt State men capped the evening with a 61-44 drubbing of the Hornets.

Larissa Richards recorded her seventh double-double of the season — and flirted with a triple-double — finishing with 10 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocked shots. Freshman Lizzy Jeronimus, the MIAA’s reigning player of the week, led the Gorillas with 12 points and added four rebounds and four assists.

The Gorillas trailed 24-20 at halftime and took their first lead since late in the first half on Amanda Orloske’s 3-pointers with 9:39 left in the game.

Pitt State outscored the Hornets 12-6 the rest of the way for the win.

Emporia State was led by Merissa Quick’s 15 points and 12 rebounds. Heather Robben added 11.

The Gorillas began pulling away midway through the first half and never looked back.

Pitt State (14-11, 10-8) turned a 14-all tie into 32-25 halftime lead and then led by as many as 25 in the second half. The Hornets (8-15, 4-13) shot just 30 percent in the second half, including 12 percent from behind the arc.

The Gorillas got 12 points from Eric Ray while JaVon McGee added 11 points and seven rebounds. Andra Bailey scored eight points and grabbed 12 rebounds.

The Hornets were led by Chris Sights’ game-high 13 points but didn’t have another player in double figures.

The Gorillas forced ESU into 18 turnovers while committing just eight themselves.

Pittsburg State hits the road on Saturday for a pair of key games at Washburn.

The Gorilla women will be looking to clinch the MIAA title against the second-place Lady Blues. The Pitt State men will try to improve their standing for the MIA tournament against the third-place Ichabods.
