The Joplin Miners, rebounding from a doubleheader loss at Carl Junction Post 781, swept the Carthage Merchants on Wednesday night in American Legion baseball at Joe Becker Stadium.
The Miners, collecting 25 hits, beat Carthage 10-4 and 10-0 in five innings in the non-district twinbill.
Carl Junction, on Tuesday night, beat the Miners 6-2 and 2-1 in 10 innings in a District 15 doubleheader.
The Miners (26-14 overall, 7-3) will call on McDonald County tonight at Anderson for another district pair.
The Miners had 13 hits to support the four-hit pitching of right-hander against Carthage in Game 1. Joplin scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 6-3 lead and weren’t caught.
Keith Simpson had three hits and as many RBI for the Miners. Bryce Ash was 3-for-3 with two RBI and Brett Graham 2-for-3 with two RBI.
Hank Millard worked four inninga for the Miners in the second contest and fellow right-hander Caleb Garton finished.
Simpson was 3-for-3 with one RBI and Nate Brummer 2-for-3 with three RBI to pace the Miners at the plate in the second game. Graham and Tristan Ash each had two hits and as many RBI.
Said Joplin coach Bobby Stackhouse: “I felt like we did a real job of hitting the ball and tacking on runs each inning (in the doubleheader). Nearly every time they (Carthage) came to bat they were trailing by more runs than the previous inning. That can be demoralizing trying to mount a comeback.”
