Zack Steadman scored what proved to be the winning run in the top of the seventh inning as the Joplin Outlaws edged the St. Joseph Mustangs 3-2 late Monday night at Wendell Redden Stadium.
The Mustangs won the first game of the doubleheader 5-2 in 16 innings.
The Outlaws play their final game in Joplin tonight at 7 against Chillicothe. They play Thursday night in a 6 o’clock doubleheader against Ozark at Carthage’s Carl Lewton Stadium.
Monday night’s second game against the Mustangs was a makeup of a rainout in St. Joseph, so the Outlaws were the visiting team.
The Outlaws led 2-1 when Patrick Drake led off the Joplin seventh with a single but was forced out at second on Steadman’s grounder to third. Steadman, who’s signed with Missouri Southern, then took second on a passed ball, moved to third on Justin Treece’s grounder and scored on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.
Carlos Rodriguez was hit by a pitch in the Mustangs’ seventh and took third on Kyle Richards’ single.
Ethan Mather came in to pitch for Travis Northern, and while Rodriguez later scored on a successful double steal, Mather struck out the three batters he faced to earn his fifth save. Mather threw only 10 pitches, nine for strikes.
Northern (4-1) allowed six hits in six innings, fanned three and walked one.
The Mustangs scored in the first inning, but the Outlaws tallied single runs in the second and third to take the lead.
Koby Chadick singled and Kyle Dickens walked to begin the second, and Conner White’s two-out single plated Chadick.
Treece and Taylor Eaves walked in the Joplin third, and Chadick’s single scored Treece.
Chadick went 3-for-3 to raise his season batting average to .296, and Drake contributed two hits to Joplin’s seven-hit attack.
