WEBB CITY, Mo. —
Kyra Parker, a pitcher for the Webb City High School Class 4 District 12 championship softball team, signed a letter of intent on Friday with Southwest Baptist University of Bolivar.
The right-handed Parker and Tyler Alexander were the only two seniors on the 2012 Cardinal edition that won more than 20 games and was unbeaten in the Central Ozark Conference Large Division.
Parker, who earned four varsity letters, transferred to Webb City after her eighth-grade year at Riverton.
Parker, as a senior, finished 6-2 with a 1.80 earned run average. She struck out 32 and walked just four batters in 56 innings.
Said Webb City coach Walter Resa: “Kyra loves the game and will work to improve. She was a terrific team player for us and did everything we asked her to do. She’s an outstanding player and an even better person. She has great attributes as a person.
“She has an outstanding change and a good drop ball,” Resa said of her strengths as a pitcher. “Her capability was shown when she defeated Blue Springs.”
Said Parker: “I realize I’ll have to work my hardest. I’m hoping to work hard enough — and improve enough — to become one of their starting pitchers.”
The NCAA Division II Bearcats, who belong to the MIAA, have a new head coach in Jamie Halbrook.
Kyra, the daughter of Paula and Mitchell Parker, plans to major in education and teach at the elementary level. Kyra is looking to hook up with a traveling team for the summer.
