PORTLAND, Ore. — State health officials say they have not been able to determine whether McMinnville High School football players who were hospitalized last month took a creatine supplement, but there does not appear to be a single cause for their muscle pains and other problems.

The 24 players fell ill last month after an intense preseason workout.

Three players required emergency surgery to their triceps to relieve pain caused by high pressure that impeded blood flow.

Another five players had muscle pain and creatine kinase levels 100 times the normal level. Creatine kinase is a naturally occurring enzyme released by muscles when they’re injured.

A team of state experts who tested the athletes said it was not possible to determine whether creatine supplements contributed to the high level of creatine kinase.
