CASSVILLE, Mo. —
Carl Junction built an early lead and then pulled away in the second half to open Big 8 Conference play with a 69-48 win over Cassville on Friday night.
The Bulldogs (6-3) led 33-25 at the half and then outscored Cassville (4-5) 21-14 in the third quarter for some breathing room.
Dustin Satterlee hit four 3-pointers and led Carl Junction with 19 points while Travis Vogt and Matt Magee added 12 and 10, respectively.
Cassville’s Ethan Lowery scored a game-high 20 points and Garrett Kirk added eight.
Galena boys 52, McAuley 39
GALENA, Kan. — Galena’s improved defense in the third quarter spelled doom for the McAuley Catholic boys as the Bulldogs pulled away for the win.
McAuley took a 22-21 lead into halftime before Galena increased its defensive pressure and outscored the Warriors 19-5 in the third quarter.
Galena was led by Ray Slimp’s 14 points while Deven Newman added eight.
McAuley got a game-high 16 points from Shaw Robertson and seven from Cole Lowry.
Verona boys 37, College Heights 23
Ascencion Estrada scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers, as Verona defeated College Heights in a nonconference game at Ozark Christian College that served as homecoming for College Heights.
Verona, which led 16-12 at halftime, outscored the Cougars 21-11 in the second half.
Josh Woodmansee led College Heights with nine points, including a 3-pointer.
Verona girls 35, College Heights 28
Taylor Pinkly scored 14 points to help the Wildcats triumph in the nonconference game at Ozark Christian College.
Pinkly had eight points in the first quarter to key the visitors’ 10-7 advantage. CHC trailed 19-13 at the half.
Shelby Barsotti added eight points for Verona.
CHC received 12 points and three steals from Kirsty Green. Makenzie Paden grabbed nine rebounds and Afton Clevenger had six boards and two steals.
SWIMMING
Stauffer wins for Eagles
WEBB CITY, Mo. — Joplin’s Kate Stauffer won the 200-yard individual medley during a prep swimming meet on Thursday at Buck Minor Pool.
The Eagles beat Hillcrest 77-66 but lost their other duals to Lamar 87-62, Webb City 89-76 and Nixa 121-39.
Lamar also beat Webb City 85-82 and Hillcrest 97-58, and Webb City downed Hillcrest 100-68.
Stauffer also placed second in the 100 breaststroke and joined Lina Bartel, Kathleen Hughes and Nalynn Gurley on the 200 medley relay team that finished second.
Webb City’s Katarina Wallace won the 500 freestyle, and the Cardinals’ Alicia Hargis and Zoey Beck took 1-2 in the one-meter diving.
For Lamar, Kenna Roland won the 100 backstroke and was second in the 200 freestyle. The Tigers’ 200 freestyle relay team of Roland, Kaelyn Sturgell, Johnna Cato and Rose Compton also took second place.
