Carthage's defense shuts down Joplin

Carthage held Joplin without a field goal for an 11-minute span and defeated the Eagles 58-28 in a girls nonconference game Monday night at Young Gymnasium.

Vanessa Pawlak sank three 3-pointers and led Carthage with 23 points. Chloe Shepherd chipped in 18 points, including 12 in the first half as the Tigers took a 33-10 lead into halftime.

“With the exception of about a three-minute span in the third quarter, I thought our defense was pretty good,” said Carthage head coach Jim Moore.

Joplin’s attempts to get the ball inside for shots close to the basket were repeatedly tipped away or stolen by Carthage.

“Our post play with Quincy Charleston was pretty solid,” Moore said, “and the rest of our help defense was good taking away the lob over the top.”

Carthage (12-4) scored the game’s first 11 points, but Joplin cut into the lead with baskets off of offensive rebounds by Danielle Hollingshead and Samantha Stout, who led the Eagles with 11 points.

A 3-pointer by Stout — her first of three 3-pointers — and a layup by Naomi Alexander, assisted by Bailey Taylor, pulled the Eagles to within 14-9 early in the second quarter.

From there, Carthage went on a 28-1 run that lasted until the middle of the third quarter. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Taylor and Kelsey Johnson ended Joplin’s scoring drought.

“They jumped out on us 7-0,” Joplin head coach Dustin Larsen said. “There were a number of times when we got defensive stops.

“We were making not real crisp passes, not getting a lot of movement on offense,” he said. “We’re better at rebounding, but I think they had 10 points on offensive rebounds.”

Joplin (1-11) outscored Carthage 14-4 during the second half of the third quarter, but Carthage regained its momentum by scoring the first 10 points of the fourth quarter.

Taylor, who scored 10 points, made five of seven free throws. Joplin was five of 11 from the free-throw line, while Carthage made seven of 13 free-throw attempts.
