NEVADA, Mo. —
Missouri Class 4 power Republic defeated Joplin 70-21 to open basketball competition in the annual Nevada Lady Classic on Monday night.
Joplin is in Pool B with Republic, and Blue Valley (Kan.) Southwest, Carthage, Nevada and Raymore-Peculiar make up Pool A.
The tournament resumes on Wednesday with Joplin meeting Blue Valley Southwest at 6 p.m. and Carthage facing Nevada at 7:30.
Alice Heinzler, an all-stater for the defending state champion, powered Republic with six treys among 28 points. Tori Taylor added 10 and Alex Botkin and Michayla Shanks each had nine.
Joplin’s Kelsey Johnson, who had two 3s, scored eight for the Eagles.
Webb City girls 65, McDonald County 30
ANDERSON, Mo. — The visiting Cardinals built a 37-18 halftime lead in the contest between former Southwest Conference rivals.
The Cardinals received 20 points from Mikaela Burgess, 15 from Kaitlin Beason and 12 from Casey Heger. Desirea Buerge and Megan Heman tallied nine apiece.
Beason scored nine points as Webb City led 20-11 after one quarter.
“Kaitlin (who had four treys) was a key,” McDonald County coach LaDonna McClain said. “She did a lot for them.”
Preslea Reece scored 15 points to pace the Mustangs.
