Jordyn Williams, who helped the Webb City High School girls basketball team finish second, first and third at state the past three seasons in a reserve role, signed a letter of intent with John Brown University on Wednesday.

The 5-foot-7 Williams said she made two visits to the NAIA Division I school in Siloam Springs, Ark.

“It’s only about 1 1/2 hours (to Siloam Springs from Webb City),” Williams said. “I really liked the coaches (Jeff Soderquist and assistant Von Eshnaur) and the campus.”

Williams, who plans to major in sports medicine, said she wasn’t sure what position she’d play for the Golden Eagles.

“I’m just excited to have the opportunity to move on in basketball at the next level,” Williams said.

Said Webb City coach Brad Shorter: “She’s capable of playing the point or shooting guard. She might be too small to play the position of small forward. It just depends on what the focus is for her by the JBU coaches.

“She can shoot the ball. She has good vision of the floor. She can defend,” Shorter said. “She has to become a better ball-handler if the focus is for her to play the point. She has the work ethic to get it done.

“Her role for us was huge in our three trips to Columbia,” Shorter said. “I’m very proud of her. She was a team player.”

JBU finished 20-12 overall and 14-8 in the Sooner Athletic Conference in 2010-11. It lost 76-51 to Campbellsville (Ky.) in the first round of nationals at Jackson, Tenn.
