ABILIENE, Texas —
Missouri Southern began its softball season with 14-8 and 1-0 losses to Texas Woman’s University of Denton in a doubleheader Friday in the Whitten Inn Classic at Poly Wells Field.
Lions leadoff batter Breanna Volkmann had three singles, a stolen base and scored a run in the first game and led the Lions with four hits in the doubleheader.
Right fielder Brooke Hurley was 2-for-3, scored twice and drove in a run in the first game. First baseman Shelby Romines and third baseman Brooke Swadley each had two hits for the Lions.
Trailing 7-0 in the fourth inning, the Lions scored a run on an RBI single by Swadley after walks to Hurley and catcher Lydia Niemegeers. The Lions scored twice in the fifth on an error, a double by Hurley and a two-out, two-run single by Romines.
Missouri Southern cut the lead to 10-5 with two runs in the sixth. Swadley and Volkmann singled and Dru Coleman walked, loading the bases. Shortstop Alysha Poteat drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Hurley drove in a run with a single to left.
The Lions added three runs in the seventh. Romines led off with a single and later scored on a dropped popup. Second baseman Brianna Fulkerson singled in Chloe Brown, who had walked, and Swadley, who reached on the error.
In the second game, Texas Woman’s limited the Lions to three hits — singles by Volkmann, designated hitter Haley Pypes and Hurley. Lions starting pitcher Hannah Cooke, who tossed a six-inning complete game, allowed four hits, five walks and struck out one.
Texas Woman’s scored the winning run on two walks and a single in the fifth inning.
Today’s schedule has been moved back because of cold weather. The Lions are scheduled to play East Central (Okla.) at 2 p.m. and Abilene Christian at 4.
