Gorilla women enter cross country nationals at MSSU

The Pittsburg State women’s cross country team will compete in today’s NCAA Division II national championships after finishing fifth in the Central Region two weeks ago.

The Gorillas are in a 32-team championship field and will compete in the six-kilometer race at 11:30 a.m. today at the Missouri Southern course.

Pitt State is making its third consecutive appearance at nationals. The Gorillas finished 15th at Spokane, Wash., in 2011 and 12th at Lousiville in 2010.

Senior Kaley Temaat, who finished 79th overall at the 2011 national meet, led the Gorillas at the Central Regional in Joplin as she placed 26th in 22 minutes, 11 seconds. Junior Casey Epps finished 33rd in 22:22.

Bridgette McCormick, Hannah DeVries and Alex Moase finished close behind in 35th, 39th and 42nd, respectively. Amanda Callaway and Cate Dunn also qualifed by taking 60th and 61st at the regional.

This marks Pitt State’s 10th appearance at nationals. Coach Russ Jewett’s Gorillas’ best finish was seventh place in 1992.
