GRANBY, Mo. —
Webb City, fueled by sophomore Desirea Buerge’s 20 points, held off East Newton 47-46 Thursday night in the nonconference girls basketball game.
The Patriots, trailing by two points, had possession of the ball with 18 seconds remaining but committed a turnover.
Mikaela Burgess’ two free throws gave the Cardinals a four-point lead and allowed them to withstand Emily Brummett’s trey for the Patriots with three seconds left.
Casey Heger added 15 points for Webb City.
East Newton received 12 points from Haley Heilig and nine from Brummett.
The Patriots (3-3) outscored Webb City 18-10 in the fourth quarter after trailing 19-14 at the half and 37-28 after three quarters.
Sheldon boys 40, Thomas Jefferson 33
Sheldon outscored the Cavaliers 8-2 in the fourth quarter to pull away with the seven-point win.
Thomas Jefferson trailed by just one heading into the final quarter before hitting just one shot the rest of the way.
“We had some decent looks, we just couldn’t buy a bucket,” Thomas Jefferson coach Chris Myers said. “We couldn’t get anything to fall. They got us out of our offensive rhythm a bit, but we had our chances.”
Tyler Thurman led the Cavaliers (2-4) with a game-high 17 points while Justin Brown added eight.
Sheldon got 12 points from Reed Worlsey and 10 from Cory Baney.
Thomas Jefferson travels to Riverton tonight.
Republic girls 70, Carl Junction 29
REPUBLIC, Mo. — Republic, the defending Class 4 state champion, jumped out to a 13-6 first-quarter lead and led 37-15 at the half.
Republic (4-0) got a game-high 21 points from Alice Heinzler while Michayla Shanks added 11 and Alex Botkin had 10.
Carl Junction’s Brenlee McPherson scored a team-high 17 points and Bradyn Wall added eight.
The Bulldogs (2-5) host St. Mary’s-Colgan tonight.

Neosho blanks Joplin
NEOSHO, Mo. — Neosho won seven matches by pin and defeated Joplin 71-0 in a nonconference dual.
Neosho, which placed fourth at the Class 3 state tournament last season, had pins by Kyler Rea at 106 pounds, Brayden Brookman at 120, Nate Rodriguez at 132, Kyle Hostetter at 145, Austin Hailey at 170, Jacob Brock at 182 and Aaron Clardy at 285.
Joplin’s Danny Drouin at 220 dropped a 3-2 decision to Neosho’s Christian Lopez, and Don Hollingshead was decisioned by Sam Williams of Neosho 7-0 at 152.
