MSSU baseball opens home series today

Missouri Southern begins a three-game weekend series against Nebraska-Kearney with its home opener at 5 p.m. today at Joe Becker Stadium.

The game originally was scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. The two teams will finish the series beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday with a nine-inning game followed by a seven-inning contest.

Missouri Southern (5-2 overall, 1-2 MIAA) swept a four-game series against Montana-Billings at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn., then salvaged the third game of a three-game series at Lindenwood.

Sam Ryan leads the Lions with a .444 batting average that includes teams highs in hits (12), doubles (6), total bases (18) and slugging percentage (.667).

Nick Doughty (.310 average) is second on the team in hits with nine, just ahead of Shaun Hoover (.364) and Dallas Burke (.333) who each have eight hits. The Lions are batting .294 as a team and have outscored their opponents 45-33.

David Reese leads the Lions’ pitching staff with an 0.75 earned-run average in three appearances, including one start. He has allowed eight hits and no walks in 12 innings while striking out eight.

Ryan Bates (1-0, 4.76) is the Lions’ only other pitcher who has pitched at least 10 innings.

The Lions are scheduled to play a doubleheader beginning at noon Wednesday at Central Oklahoma. The doubleheader was originally scheduled for Tuesday.
