SALINA, Kan. —
Two Columbus wrestlers brought home medals Saturday in the KSHSAA Class 4A Championships at Salina.
Gavin Houser of Columbus was runnerup at 195 pounds after Skyler Hittle of Concordia won the championship match with a 7-3 decision. Houser, a senior, finished with a record of 31-10.
Taylor Watkins (36-6), a sophomore, placed third at 152 with a 1-0 victory against Tanner Ogden of Hoyt-Royal Valley.
Pittsburg’s Gershom Avalos at 220 was one of three medalists for the Purple Dragons. Avalos (35-7), a senior, pinned Austin Gates of Pratt in the first period for third place.
Jeremiah Jones (37-8), a senior, placed fifth at 113, and Pittsburg teammate Levi Kester (23-16), a junior, was sixth at 106.
MIAMI WRESTLER WINS TITLE
Eli Hale of Miami capped an undefeated season with a 6-0 decision against Dayton Garrett of Tuttle for the championship in the 120-pound bracket Saturday in the Oklahoma Class 4A State Tournament at Oklahoma City.
Hale (37-0), a senior, is a three-time state finalist and four-time state qualifier who has signed to wrestle at Oklahoma State.
Miami, which finished seventh in the team standings, picked up another medal when Jason He (35-7), a senior at 195 pounds, decisioned Kyler Ferguson of Woodward 5-4 for third place. Ferguson defeated He 7-5 in their first-round matchup.

Large-school state track and field competition begins today
