Party on? No local love in Princeton Review rankings

JOPLIN, Mo. — There's no love for Missouri Southern State University, Pittsburg State University or Crowder College in the new rankings issued by the Princeton Review.

Which, given many of the survey categories, isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Based on a list determined by 126,000 students in a nationwide survey, the University of Iowa was named Best Party School.  Rounding out the Top 5 are: University of California, Santa Barbara; the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; West Virginia University and Syracuse University.

The organization also released its Stone-Cold Sober Schools list ' led again this year by Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah; and followed by Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill. and College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo.

The University of Missouri was ranked No. 6 in the Jock Schools category, No. 5 in Students Pack the Stadiums and No. 20 in Best Athletic Facilities.

Washington University in St. Louis came in at No. 9 in Best Campus Food, No. 2 in Best College Dorms and No. 9 in Happiest Students.

Kansas State University hit No. 6 in Happiest Students, No. 3 in Jock Schools and No. 11 in Best-Run Colleges.

The rankings are based on surveys in which an average of 333 students per campus are asked 80 questions about a range of subjects in the last three school years. Its methodology uses a five-point scale, allowing for school-to-school comparisons.

Universities routinely dismiss the rankings as unscientific and invalid, while praising the free publicity that comes along with positive ones.

The Princeton Review rankings include categories such as Great Financial Aid, Most and Least Accessible Professors, Most Conservative Students, Most Liberal Students, Happiest Students, Reefer Madness, Don't Inhale and Birkenstock-Wearing, Tree-Hugging, Clove-Smoking Vegetarians.

The privately held education services company has published "The Best 378 Colleges" book annually since 1992. It includes 62 lists, such as the best-run college ' Claremont McKenna College in California ' and best college library ' Columbia University in New York City.
