School Board begins interview process for board vacancy

JOPLIN, Mo. — The Joplin Board of Education began the interview process to fill a vacancy in a special meeting Thursday morning.

Four people applied for the position: Steve Drewes, general manager at Downstream Casino Resort; Anne Wells, a Joplin attorney; Joan Phillips, past president of the Joplin High School band booster club; and Dawn Sticklen, a freelance writer and co-owner of Sticklen and Crosthwait Law Firm.

Drewes and Wells interviewed for the position this morning.

Board member Ashley Micklethwaite resigned last month after accepting a position with Sisters of Mercy Health System in St. Louis. The replacement will serve the remainder of Micklethwaite’s term through April 2013. The appointed member may stand for re-election at that time.

The remaining candidates will be interviewed during a special meeting at 4:30 p.m. Monday because of scheduling conflicts.

All applicants received questions from the board in advance. The board asked applicants about their public service background, why they want to serve, what they see as the main responsibilities of the board, what they see as the district’s greatest strengths and weaknesses, and what they personally could bring to the board. All interviews were held in open session.

Also at the meeting, the board voted to approve the purchase of additional MacBooks and cases for high school students. The board went into closed session for personnel and identifiable records.

THE JOPLIN BOARD OF EDUCATION plans to announce it choice for a new member at the next regular board meeting on Tuesday, June 26. The agenda calls for a work session at 5:30 p.m. and the regular session at 7 p.m. at the administration building, 3901 E. 32nd St.
