JOPLIN, Mo. —
The Joplin area and virtually all of Southwest Missouri are under a tornado watch until 3 p.m. today.
Conditions are favorable for an isolated tornado, but the overall severe weather threat through this morning is expected to be limited, according to a statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) forecast office in Springfield.
The storms could produce damaging winds and severe hail, the NWS said. Up to an inch of rain could accompany the storms.
The storms are being triggered by a cold front that is clashing with warm, moist air from the Gulf of Mexico. By Thursday night, temperatures could fall into the teens.
