JOPLIN, Mo. —
The Joplin City Council wasted no time in appointing a new member to the city’s tax-increment financing commission during a council meeting Monday night.
Financial adviser Lane Clevenger, 32, has been tabbed to replace Michael Hagan, a banker, who resigned last week.
The city appoints six of the 11 commission members. The five remaining positions are composed of designates from the school district, Jasper County and the Joplin Special Road District.
The new appointee has been in the financial advising industry since 2001 and does business at Clevenger Financial, 2920 S. Main St.
Clevenger also has served on the board of the Downtown Joplin Alliance, formerly Main Street Joplin, for several years. He also serves on the board of directors of Watered Gardens and is an elder at Christ Church of Joplin.
Clevenger said he has been observing the work of the TIF Commission. “I had some interest in the process and the future of our city,” he said.
Mayor Melodee Colbert-Kean said, “He has been to a couple of the meetings, so he is aware of the work the commission is doing.”
The TIF Commission is currently assigned to study and make a recommendation to the Joplin City Council on a proposal to establish what has been described as the largest TIF in the state, at 3,000 acres. The district is intended to underpin a portion of financing for $806 million in redevelopment projects toward recovery from the 2011 tornado.
The TIF Commission is currently scheduled to meet at 3 p.m. Thursday to discuss questions the school district has posed for answers by the city and the master developer. The commission also will continue a public hearing on the proposal at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
