City to celebrate 90th anniversary of golf course

JOPLIN, Mo. — Birthday cake and 90-cent green fees are in the works to celebrate Schifferdecker Golf Course’s 90th year.

An observance is planned for Friday, June 29, at the course clubhouse, with 90-cent green fees when a golf cart is rented. Birthday cake will be served to golfers when they arrive.

An era of interest in health and fitness that started in 1910 created a national buzz on the game of golf that led to the construction of the city-operated course, which opened in 1922.

It originally was designed for nine holes by Dewey Longworth, who then was the 24-year-old pro at Oak Hill Country Club, which is now Twin Hills Golf and Country Club. The course had a par of 37 and the only all-grass greens in the area.

The course was dedicated in a ceremony on June 28, 1922, with speeches by city officials and band music. Businesses in the city closed at 2 p.m. that day to allow residents to attend the fanfare celebrating the official opening of the course. Only two years later, the course was expanded to 18 holes.

The course is considered historic because it is located alongside what became Route 66.

Recent attention to the course included about $500,000 in repairs in 2008 and 2009 to try to bolster play. The projects included new tee boxes, new drainage systems in areas where the course held water, removal of damaged trees, new vegetation, and replacement of the fleet of 60 carts.

The usual green fee is $11.50 on weekdays, and $14.40 on weekends and holidays, with senior rates for people 60 and older of $7.75 and $10. Golf carts are $10.50 per person for 18 holes and half that for nine holes.

Season passes are $1,050 with a cart and $525 without. Senior season passes are $850 with cart and $425 without. Golfers also may buy 10- and 25-play passes.

In the park

THE GOLF COURSE is in Schifferdecker Park. The entrance is just north of Seventh Street off Schifferdecker Avenue. The course opens at 7 a.m. daily. Tee times and details: 417-624-3533.
