Area senior centers double as cooling centers in high heat

— With temperatures returning to triple digits after a brief reprieve, several area buildings, primarily senior centers, are doubling as cooling centers.

Information is as follows.

• Barton County Senior Center, 306 W. 11th St., Lamar. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. The center is open to senior citizens only. Details: 417-682-3881.

• Vernon County Senior Center, 301 N. Main St., Nevada. Hours are 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. weekdays. Details: 660-747-3107.

• Joplin Senior Center, 2202 S. Jackson Ave. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. The center is open to senior citizens only. Details: 417-781-9353.
