JOPLIN, Mo. —
A Kansas City photographer won top honors in PhotoSpiva 2013 for a collection of three photos taken in Uganda.
Gloria Baker Feinstein won first place for three digital images: "Beauty Salon," "Maybelline Model" and "Three Grandmothers." She was chosen by juror Natash Egan, executive director of the Museum of Contemporary Photography at Columbia College.
Winners were announced during a juror's lecture Friday at Spiva Center for the Arts. Other winners include:
~ Richard C. Aardsma, of Grandville, Mich., received second place for two archival digital prints, "Diner" and "Train Station."
~ Samantha Ann VanDeman, of Villa Park, Ill., won third place for two digital prints, "Red Chair, Hotel Adler, Sharon Springs, New York" and "Zebra Print, Hotel Adler, Sharon Springs, New York."
~ Tim R. Buchanan, of Nixa, Emma Rae Kisiel, of Lawrence, Kan., and Hyounsang Yoo, of Chicago, were given merit awards.
~ Rachel M. Cox, of Albuquerque, N.M., Esmeralda Ruiz, of Richmond, Calif., and John R. Van Beekum, of Miami Shores, Fla. were awarded for honorable mention.
More than 1,000 images were submitted by 199 photographers for this year's exhibit and contest. Seventy-three works by 66 of those photographers were selected for the exhibit.
The exhibit is open at Spiva Center for the Arts until May 5. According to a press release, PhotoSpiva is the longest running competition of its kind in the U.S.

A giant vinyl banner adorned with heartfelt messages from Joplin tornado survivors to the residents of Moore, Okla., became a centerpiece of Wednesday’s observance of the two-year anniversary of the May 22, 2011, tornado.
