NEVADA, Mo. —
Northbound U.S. Highway 71 traffic at the Missouri-North Arkansas railroad bridge near Vernon County Route TT, north of Nevada, will be shifted into one southbound lane beginning Monday, according to the Missouri Department of Transportation.
The northbound railroad bridge will be replaced under MoDOT’s Safe & Sound Bridge Improvement Program.
On Monday, southbound traffic will be reduced to one lane and will use the right lane of northbound of Highway 71 at the railroad bridge. Northbound traffic will be reduced to one lane and then shifted into the southbound left lane at the railroad bridge.
The speed limit in the work zone will be reduced to 60 mph.
Over the next several months, the northbound railroad bridge will be removed and replaced with a new structure.
The work is taking place in the same area as a project to build an interchange on Highway 71 at Route TT. The interchange project is part of the overall plan to upgrade the highway to interstate standards. MoDOT is waiting on federal approval to designate the route as Interstate 49. The federal approval is expected later this year.
APAC-Missouri of Columbia is the prime contractor, doing the work for a low bid amount of $4.6 million.
The project is scheduled for completion by Dec. 1.

The 26-year-old Joplin resident could not convince his jailers they had the wrong guy. “I got the run-around the whole weekend,” Millard told the Globe. “I didn’t even get to wish my mother a happy Mother’s Day.”
