Freedom of Flight Museum to hold first fundraising event Friday

JOPLIN, Mo. — Sentimental Journey, a Boeing B-17 bomber from World War II, roared into Joplin today to kick off the inaugural fundraising event for the Freedom of Flight Museum on Friday.

The plane, which underwent fuel-pump repairs earlier this week in Garden City, Kan., touched down at 10:44 a.m. today at the Joplin Regional Airport.

The fundraising event will feature a 1940s theme hanger dance and dinner catered by Mythos of Joplin. The centerpiece of the dance will be Sentimental Journey.

A local group, “This Side Up,” will provide USO style entertainment. Dance and costume contests, a silent auction and guest speakers complement the evening’s activities.

Keynote speaker Bret Steffen, director of education for the Experimental Aircraft Association, will speak on the role museums can play in area education.

Cost for the event is $75 per person with a discount available when purchasing a table seating 10.  Tickets for the dinner and dance can be purchased by calling 417-553-2683. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.eventbrite.com or www.freedomofflightmuseum.org.

Proceeds benefit Freedom of Flight Museum, which is a 501(c)3.

In addition to the museum, Mizzou Aviation and Alpha Air Center will sponsor an open house at the Joplin Regional Airport from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Activities feature tours and rides on the B-17, static aircraft displays and hands-on educational activities for kids and adults.

Admission is free to the public.
