Wintry mix, bitter cold forecast for parts of Southwest Missouri

JOPLIN, Mo. — Light snow and freezing drizzle are forecast for today for parts of Southwest Missouri, according to the National Weather Service forecast office in Springfield.

Areas along and north of U.S. Highway 54 from Nevada to Rolla are expected to receive 2 to 4 inches of snow before the snow tapers to freezing drizzle tonight.

For locations along the Interstate 44 corridor, a dusting of up to 2 inches of snow will be possible. The precipitation could change over to rain in the afternoon, further reducing the accumulation of snow.

Light freezing drizzle or freezing rain, mixed with light snow, will be possible tonight for the Joplin area, resulting in a glaze of ice.

Wind chill values will drop into the teens and possibly the single digits tonight through Thursday night, the weather service said.
