Jasper County reaches settlement over jail inmate expense

—  A settlement agreement has been reached between Jasper County and Henry County to pay some of the cost of housing inmates that were sent there by former Sheriff Archie Dunn.

Jasper County is to pay Henry County $50,000 and then the Jasper County Commission will try to recover the money from Dunn, according to the terms of the agreement that was discussed Friday morning in Jasper County Circuit Court at Carthage. A motions hearing on the case was scheduled  there today.

Henry County filed a lawsuit against Jasper County and Dunn after Dunn sent prisoners in 2011 because of overcrowding in the Jasper County Jail.

When bills came in from the other counties, there was a dispute between Dunn and the county over who was responsible for them. Jasper County Commissioners refused to approve the bills saying the costs were not the subject of a contract and were not included in the sheriff’s budget.

Dunn also sent prisoners to some other counties for housing. The other counties did not take further action to collect but Henry County filed a lawsuit. Costs there were more than $80,000.
