Jewish and Muslim volunteers from New York wrap up week of relief work

JOPLIN, Mo. — Jewish and Muslim volunteers from New York ended their week in Joplin with Friday prayers at the temporary mosque at Pavilions West Shopping Center, to be followed by Shabbat service at the United Hebrew Congregation synagogue.

The volunteers have been working this week with Rebuild Joplin to rebuild three houses destroyed by the May 2011 tornado. They are with Bridges: Muslim-Jewish Interfaith Dialogue at New York University; the Jewish Disaster Relief Corps; and ICNA Relief, part of the Islamic Circle of North America.

“It’s a bunch of us Muslim and Jewish kids working together to do good,” said Shanjida Chowdhury, 18, a Muslim student at NYU.

She said she has been inspired by the hope and spirit she has seen in the people of Joplin. “I’m really sore, but it’s a good kind of pain,” she said.
