Winter storm to bring sleet, snow, but no ice storm expected

JOPLIN, Mo. — A winter storm that will bring sleet and snow will arrive in the area Wednesday evening, according to the National Weather Service station in Springfield.

Doug Cramer, meteorologist with the NWS, said up and inch of snow and sleet is expected for the region before the storm moves through Thursday morning.

“We are not expecting an ice storm to have impacts such as bringing down power lines and trees,” he said today, adding that the storm is not forecast to bring the kind of ice accumulation that hit the area five years ago, causing widespread power outages.

Strong wings with gusts of more than 20 miles per hour also are expected.
