Construction updates, new budget on agenda for Joplin school board

The Joplin Board of Education will discuss the budget for the upcoming school year, officially offer the bonds for sale that were approved by voters in April, and be briefed on construction projects during its regular meeting on Tuesday.

“We’ve got to accept the budget,” Board President Randy Steele said Friday. “We’re also looking at hopefully a pay raise for employees.”

The board also will begin awarding bids to rebuild Irving Elementary School, Steele said. The new school, to be built on property where the old St. John’s Regional Medical Center was located, replaces the school destroyed in the May 22, 2011, tornado.

Superintendent C.J. Huff also will give an update to the board on other construction projects throughout the district.

“The architects will be seeking board approval of design for Joplin High School to get assurance from the board that they’re on the right track,” Huff said.

The previous high school also was destroyed in that tornado.

Dawn Sticklen, who was nominated last week to fill a vacancy on the board, will be officially seated for the meeting.

Ashley Micklethwaite resigned her board seat last month after accepting a position with Sisters of Mercy Health System that will require her to move to St. Louis. Sticklen will serve the remainder of Micklethwaite’s term through April 2013. She said she would seek election to a full term next April.

Sticklen is a freelance writer and co-owner of Sticklen and Crosthwait Law Firm. Her involvement in the Vote Hope campaign, which urged people to vote in favor of the $62 million school bond issue in April, was a big factor in the board’s decision to nominate her, Steele said.

Additionally, Huff said the board will discuss its goals for the upcoming school year and ways it can measure those goals.

The district is also making appointments for the 2012-2013 school year. Paul Barr, the district’s chief financial officer, will continue as the board’s treasurer. Patricia Waldo will be the new board secretary and Terry Grace will be the new records custodian, replacing Tiny Bridges, who previously served in both of those roles.

At the end of the work session, the board will go into closed session for legal, personnel and identifiable records.
