NEOSHO, Mo. —
Newton County emergency workers collected $1,1214.20 in donations and more than 150 toys on Saturday, Dec. 8, during the annual Newton Country Christmas for Kids toy drive.
A follow-up toy drive will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Lowe’s Home Improvement Center, 1490 Clemon Drive in Neosho.
Grady Weston, assistant chief of Newton County Rescue and Recovery, said Wednesday the effort has united almost every emergency response department in the county.
“We have every fire department in Newton County on this along with the ambulance district along with (Newton County) Rescue and Recovery,” Weston said. “There are a lot of kids out there that are in need, with their family on hard times. We want them to have a great Christmas.”
During last year’s drive, the money and toys collected helped more than 600 children throughout Newton County. Grady said that he expects the need this year to be just as great.
“I’ve been going through nearly 200 applications today,” Weston said. “There is definitely a need out there and we want to get as many people taken care of as possible.”
